What is PAT testing?

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is the process of checking electrical appliances to ensure they are safe to use. It combines a thorough visual inspection with electronic tests using calibrated equipment - measuring earth continuity, insulation resistance and other key safety parameters.

While PAT testing isn't a legal requirement for most businesses, your employer's liability insurer will almost certainly require it, and it forms a key part of health and safety compliance under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
